Monday's Social Studies Test

Parents and Students-

On Monday we will be taking a short Social Studies test to assess our knowledge of Explorers and the beginning of Western Exploration.  We reviewed the concepts today in class by playing Jeopardy and discussing what the test would look like.

Students will have the choice to answer two out of the following three questions:

1.  Why did Exploration begin?
2.  Name one explorer, tell his/her story including why they were exploring, what was discovered and why it's important.
3.  Why/How do cultures change?

I'm looking for a basic understanding with reference to things we've read and studied in class in a paragraph.
Good luck!  Students will be encouraged to bring their books and their explorer notes home this weekend to study.

WEB Projects

This is just a friendly reminder that February WEB projects are due Monday.  We've done a lot of talking in the classroom over the past two weeks to help students budget their time and complete the project in segments.  Students are in good shape if summaries are complete, and projects in the works.  I've reminded the students that this weekend is Superbowl and they will want to be finished and practiced before the big game.

Our next project is due March 4th, it is a much smaller window than the previous month.  Students need to have their books chosen by Monday.  They are welcome to start new novels as soon as this month's work is complete.

Finally, don't forget about Battle of the Books.  Another round of battles will be occurring in the library in the coming weeks.  Keep reading those titles and studying those authors.

The Kindness and Justice Challenge

Since  Monday was Martin Luther King's birthday we had a discussion today about who he was and why he is an important figure in American History.  Several years ago, a program was developed by his daughter called the "KJ Challenge."  This is a program that highlights the importance of being a good person and seeking out opportunities to spread kindness and justice into the community.  There are mini lessons with the program that teach: kindness & justice, fairness, caring & compassion, and responsibility.

As part of this program, there is a challenge for each student to complete a random act of kindness or justice each day.  Yesterday in class, we took the KJ pledge and discussed what acts of kindness or justice might look like.  Each student was challenged to try to make a difference in someone's life either at home, at school, or in the community by going above and beyond to make someone's life better or easier.  These acts can be simple tasks to help someone, or can be more complex in nature.

When a student completes his/her act, they document it on a slip of paper and submit them in class.  Together we will share and celebrate these acts.  Students will keep track of how many acts of kindness they can complete, and that we can complete as a class.

It is the goal for students to see that by going above and beyond to help others, they truly can make a difference, and that good choices lead to good consequences.

Good luck spreading kindness this week!!!!  :))))

The Westwood Reading Challenge Kicks off Today!!!!

Today is the official kickoff of the annual Westwood Reading Challenge.  This year the challenge is titled "Read to Succeed" and will last for a duration of 4 weeks.  During the 4 weeks we are challenging our 5th graders to read 30 minutes per night, including Saturday and Sunday.  A note when home with the students today describing the program and the individual incentives.

The students seemed pretty pumped up about this in class today!  It is their last Westwood Reading Challenge.  It is my hope that they will strive to be the best they can be, complete their reading goal and strive to be a successful classroom team in our challenge!

Good luck and keep on reading!
Love,
Mrs. Wagner  :)
