Pennies for Pasta

This school year, our Kid City Council sponsored a program called "Pennies for Pasta."  This program is run by the Olive Garden Restaurant. (click here for a  link) The goal of the program is to collect pennies and loose change to benefit The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. 
This program really caught on like wildfire in our classroom.  The positive energy it created among the students was amazing.  Each morning I watched in awe as ziplock baggies, small containers and the program provided boxes came in full of change.  It became a "free time activity" to count the change.  Each total brought more excitement.  :)
I'm proud to say that our class raised $213.75!!!!!
While I don't know if we were the top collecting class in our building, I do know how proud I am of these wonderful fifth graders.  I hope they realize the difference they've made by donating to this organization. (They actually brought me to tears on Friday morning) Whether they win the pasta party or not, they are all winners for spreading positive energy and supporting childhood cancer and Leukemia.

Earth Day 2012

Today, in recognition of Earth Day, Westwood Elementary Students had lunches as a neighborhood.  We then set out on a "Campus Cleanup."  We grabbed some gloves and some garbage bags and set out to pick up trash, pick weeds and rake mulch all along our school campus.  Our class was in charge of the front lot and sidewalk area and the tree line on the east side of our campus. 
We then came inside, washed up and relaxed and viewed "The Lorax" cartoon by Dr. Suess.  We also talked in the classroom about the importance of taking care of our fragile environment and the things we can do to conserve energy, conserve water and recycle.
Happy Earth Day everyone!  Take some time today to do something special for our home!

MAP testing

I would just like to take a moment to thank all of the students for their hard work on the Math MAP test today.  Each individual that was assessed today took it very seriously and truly gave 100% effort.  It is so rewarding as a teacher to see students excited to reach their potential.  When I told them we were taking this test today I heard whispers of "YES!" throughout the classroom.  :)  :)

Many students made excellent gains in their test scores today!  I'm so proud of them!  :)
