PJammin - February 3rd

In honor of "World Cancer Day" on February 3rd, We have signed up to participate in a program called PJammin.  As a Westwood Community, we are going to recognize the thousands of children that suffer from this horrible illness and spend months and months in the hospital.  These children miss out on going to school, being with their friends and spend months on end in a hospital bed in their Pajamas.
We'd like to have each child at Westwood Elementary to wear their pajamas to school on February 3rd as a symbolic way of reflecting on the amount of time children with cancer must wear their PJs.  We would also like to strive to raise money for the American Childhood Cancer Organization.  Each child that wears his/her PJs is asked to donate at least $1 for the organization, and they will receive a temporary tattoo to wear with their Pjs that day.
The 4th and 5th grades at Westwood are sponsoring this event by helping to raise awareness among the school community.  4th grades will be making posters and collection boxes for classroom funds.  The 5th grade students will travel to other classrooms to notify the students and and motivate them to participate in this event.
We are hoping this experience raises awareness about childhood cancer, helps to raise money for the foundation and brings an enriching experience to our student community.  When we bond together we truly make a difference!

Did you find the Westwood Wildcat this week???

This week the Wildcat was hiding in the middle east.  He was located at the Kuwait Towers.

These three towers are very modern looking and serve a very important function in Kuwait.  The two towers have water stroage units, and the third houses equipment that controls electricity.  The tallest tower at 613 feet also has a restaurant and a revolving viewing sphere.  The other two towers hold a million gallons of water each.

Here is a picture:

Chapter 4 Math test scores

Today the Chapter 4 math test scores went home.  We took this test using a whole class response system.  The scores were generated by the computer.  Each child has a half to quarter sheet of paper that resembles a spreadsheet.  This shows the test questions, the correct answer and your child's response.  The final scores are on the bottom.  We just wanted to give you a heads up because these papers are small and are easily misplaced.

Have a great weekend,
Mrs. Wagner :)

Kindness & Justice Challenge

Since next Monday is Martin Luther King's birthday we had a discussion today about who he was and why he is an important figure in American History.  Several years ago, a program was developed by his daughter called the "KJ Challenge."  This is a program that highlights the importance of being a good person and seeking out opportunities to spread kindness and justice into the community.  There are mini lessons with the program that teach: kindness & justice, fairness, caring & compassion, and responsibility.

As part of this program, there is a challenge for each student to complete a random act of kindness or justice each day.  Today in class, we took the KJ pledge and discussed what acts of kindness or justice might look like.  Each student was challenged to try to make a difference in someone's life either at home, at school, or in the community by going above and beyond to make someone's life better or easier.  These acts can be simple tasks to help someone, or can be more complex in nature.

When a student completes his/her act, they document it on a slip of paper and submit them in class.  Together we will share and celebrate these acts.  Students will keep track of how many acts of kindness they can complete, and that we can complete as a class.

It is the goal for students to see that by going above and beyond to help others, they truly can make a difference, and that good choices lead to good consequences.

Good luck spreading kindness this week!!!!  :))))
