Halloween Trade Store

This Halloween we are starting a new Halloween math tradition.  Please bring in your candy from Oct. 31st and we will be having a trade store.  Before you trade those items you are not fond of, we will be doing a math lesson on mean, median, mode and range using your treats.  If you do not trick or treat I will place you with a friend for this activity.  Once this activity is over, the candy bag will go back into your backpack to take home.  No candy will be brought to lunch or to lunch recess.  Sorry!

Did you find the Westwood Wildcat this week???

The Wildcat was located at the Great Wall of China.  Congratulations if you guessed correctly!

Here is a bit of information taken from:  http://www.enchantedlearning.com/

The Great Wall of China was built over 2,000 years ago, by Qin Shi Huangdi, the first emperor of China during the Qin (Ch'in) Dynasty (221 B.C - 206 B.C.). In Chinese the wall is called "Wan-Li Qang-Qeng" which means 10,000-Li Long Wall (10,000 Li = about 5,000 km).

After uniting China from seven Warring States, the emperor connected and extended four old fortification walls along the north of China that originated about 700 B.C. (over 2500 years ago). Armies were stationed along the wall as a first line of defense against the invading nomadic Hsiung Nu tribes north of China (the
Huns). Signal fires from the Wall provided early warning of an attack.

Trail of History

What an amazing day we had today at the Trail of History.  It was a bit blustry, but we saw some amazing presentations depicting 19th century life in the midwest.  We saw Sweedish Immigrants, an Indentured Servant, Native American tools and weapons, we participated in building a log cabin, and even attended a pioneer school house.
The students had a great time and were very attentive listeners to the speakers.  Here are a few pictures from our day.

Thank you to our parent volunteers for attending, and to all parents that helped keep the day waste free by packing lunches in containers.
Have a wonderful weekend,
Mrs. Wagner  :)
